Dragged from the deck of the 74 HMS Spartan in 1805 by a freak accident Midshipman Harry Nelson-Heron, Boy Seaman Ferghal O'Connor and Powder Monkey Danny Gunn find themselves in the high tech world of the twenty-third Century.
Finding themselves in the hangar decks of the huge new starship NECS Vanguard, they must now come to terms not only with the change of time, but with the gap in their understanding of the universe, science and technology. They have a key role to play in the frustration of these plans, but it comes at some personal cost to Harry and his friends. They are fortunate in that fate has played a strange 'joke.' The Captain of the Vanguard is Harry's twelve times Great-nephew and he uses his contacts and relationship to secure the guardianship of the youngsters ...
